CHAPTER ONE
1.0 INTRODUCTION

The Ministry of Health runs different training programmes in the country to prepare personnel for the provision of quality health care to people living in Ghana.
The training programmes are classified into the following groups:
1.1 NURSING AND MIDWIFERY PROGRAMMES
These programmes prepare graduates to work in nursing and midwifery fields. They are regulated by the Nurses and Midwives Council of Ghana. Health Training Institutions (HTIs) offering Registered General Nursing, Registered Midwifery, Registered Mental Health Nursing, Registered Community Nursing, Community Health Nursing and Health Assistant Clinical Programmes are located in each region. Applicants interested in pursuing any of these programmes should note that they shall be required to undertake their rotations/ internship/ National Service AND at least the first two years of employment in the region of location of the Institution attended
(With the exception of students who receive support from institutions outside the region of training).

These programmes prepare graduates to work in other facilities. They are regulated by the Allied Health Professions Council and the Medical and Dental Council of Ghana. Institutions offering these programmes offer training in a wide range of Allied Health fields. These include Medicine, Public Health, Environmental Health, Physiotherapy and Orthotics, Optical, Dental and Medical Laboratory Technology.

1.3CATEGORIES OF PROGRAMMES BY LEVEL AND CERTIFICATION
In terms of certification training programmes are categorized into the following:
Auxiliary / Certificate Programmes:
These programmes are designed to turn out health workers who are non-professionals. This cadre mainly work under the supervision of health professionals. The programmes are mainly for those who are applying with their SSSCE or WASSCE results and require no previous knowledge in any health related field. However, previous experience in health facilities (such as Health Extension Workers, NIDs volunteering, Ward Assisting, etc.) may give the applicant an urge during the interview and selection process. Auxiliary programmes are run for 2 years, and successful completion leads to the award of Academic/Professional Certificate, depending on the programme pursued.

Basic / Diploma Programmes:
These programmes are run for those who are applying with their SSSCE or WASSCE results. The programmes require no previous working experience in any health related field. However, previous experience in health facilities may give the applicant an urge during the interview and selection process. Basic programmes are run for periods ranging from 2 to 3 years, and successful completion leads to the award of a Certificate, Diploma or Advanced Diploma depending on the programme pursued.
A summary of BASIC/DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES can be found in Table 3.
Post Basic / Advanced Diploma Programmes:
These are programmes which build upon Basic programmes by adding further knowledge and skills and/or encouraging focus on a particular area of study. Some Post Basic Programmes lead to specialization in certain fields of Health such as Public Health, Ophthalmic, Anesthesia, etc, whilst the others give general knowledge in patient management and care, e.g. Medical Assistant Applicants to Post Basic programmes require one year mandatory rotation/internship/national service and at least two years of experience in a relevant Basic area.
The programmes range from 1 to 2 years and successful completion leads to the award of a Certificate, Diploma or Advanced Diploma depending on the programme pursued.Applicants to Post Basic programmes should be nominated by their employing Agency and will be required to return to their Agency on successful completion for placement.

Bachelors Programmes:
The College of Health, Kintampo, currently runs a BSc in Clinical Psychiatry in collaboration with the Hampshire NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Winchester in the United Kingdom as well as a BSc in Dermatology and Venereology in partnership with the University of Utah, Salt Lake City.

1.4 GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR PROGRAMMES
Programme requirements vary according to the category of Programme and the qualification awarded on completion. For Basic programmes, Academic requirements must be met (regardless of work experience) before an applicant can be considered for interview and possible admission.
APPLICANTS CAN APPLY WITH THE WASSCE ONLY OR SSSCE ONLY AND NOT A COMBINATION OF BOTH. APPLICANTS WHO ARE CURRENTLY HEALTH PERSONNEL (AUXILIARY / CERTIFICATE HEALTH OFFICERS e.g.: Health Assistant Clinical, Community Health and Others) CAN APPLY USING A COMBINATION OF BOTH THE SSCE AND WASSCE
Applicants to Post Basic programmes require one year mandatory rotation/internship/national service and at least three years of experience in a relevant Basic area. However, candidates may apply with a two year work experience upon a request from a facility after his/her internship. Detailed requirements for all programmes can be found in chapters 2, 3 and 4.
1.4.1 Requirements for Foreign Applicants
Health Training Institutions in Ghana are open to nationals of all other countries. Foreign nationals receive the same quality of training as their Ghanaian counterparts without any form of discrimination.
Guidelines for foreign nationals interested in applying to health training institutions in Ghana are as follows:
1. Foreign students may be admitted on the basis of qualification from their home country for which the West African Examinations Council shall determine equivalences with respect to the prescribed entry requirements in Ghana. The Council establishes the validity of examination results, determines equivalence and also provides interpretation of examination results from member countries of WAEC.
2. Evidence of English proficiency for applicants from Non-English speaking Countries should be provided.
3. Foreign students will NOT enjoy government of Ghana scholarship.

CHAPTER FOUR
4.0 COLLEGE OF HEALTH, KINTAMPO (CoHK)
The College of Health Social Wellbeing, Kintampo, formerly known as the Rural Health Training School runs about 14 different programmes.These programmes range from Certificate through to the Bachelors level and cover both preventive and curative health care. Some of the programmes are direct entry programmes (for SSSCE graduates) whilst others are Post basic Entry Programmes (for serving officers)

6.0.1 Mode of Application

A. Guidelines for filling online forms
It is important to read all instructions carefully before completing the application form. Applicants are advised to complete every applicable portion of the form.
1. On the Programme Selection screen select the type programme you qualify for to apply. The options are a) Basic Programmes (SSSCE) – For applicants applying with only SSSCE results
b) Basic Programmes (WASSCE) – For applying with only WASSCE results
c) Post Basic Programmes – For applicants who are already health workers and would like to further their education. 3. Enter card details on login screen to gain access to the Application Form

Information to look out for on the application form includes:
i. Personal Information of Applicant
Name of applicant: Applicants are to write their names correctly in this order: SURNAME, FIRST NAME and OTHER NAMES as provided on the form. Official names must correspond exactly with those used for all examinations taken e.g. SSCE. The same must be used for registration on admission to the college, unless there is a legal proof of change of name.
Address of applicant: Applicants are advised to provide accurate information on their current addresses on both the form and the envelope to enable the college of choice communicate to them and also avoid incidence of returned unclaimed letters. Applicants are to provide both a correspondence address and residential address if they are not the same.
Phone number and email of applicant: Applicants are advised to provide accurate information on their current phone numbers and email address to enable easy communication between them and the college of choice. In situations where the phone number of the applicant changes, the school of choice must be duly informed.
Information on Guardian: Applicants are advised to provide sufficient and accurate information on parents / guardians as indicated on the form to make it easy to contact them when necessary.
ii. Academic Profile of Applicant and Work Experience
Applicants for Basic programmes are to provide accurate details of all Academic qualifications relevant to their application. Applicants are given the opportunity to enter results for three sittings. Applicants are to provide the overall aggregate of six subjects (3 core + 3 electives from the stated elective programmes refer to iii) for each sitting using the West African Examination Council Examination equivalences. Applicants with experience in a Health related field are also to provide details of their work experience.
Applicants for Post Basic programmes should in addition to their Academic qualification, provide details of all relevant professional experience as pertains to their programme.
iii. Choice of Programme and School
Applicants are to select their programme of choice and school in this section. All available programmes have been indicated in Appendix B. Applicants should carefully go through the programmes available, select the appropriate one and write it in the space provided. Schools offering the various programmes have also been indicated in Appendix B. Candidates are to select the appropriate Institution for the programme chosen and indicate it in the space provided. Please note that only one programme can be selected for each form purchased.
iv. Declaration
This section is in two parts. The first part is to be filled by the applicant whiles the second part is to be filled by a person of high repute (Head of former Secondary School, a Reverend Minister or a Director of a Public service or equivalent) in the case of Basic programmes, the Head of your present employment (in the case of post-basic programme applicants)

6.0.2 Submission of Completed Application Forms

b. Self-address two quarter size envelopes to enable the college of choice communicate with you.

6.1 Admission Conditions
1. Short listed candidates will be required to attend a selection interview, after which successful candidates will be offered admission.
2. Admission is subject to passing a medical examination, thus candidates will be expected to undertake a medical examination at any recognized government hospital.
3. All applicants admitted into any Ministry of Health /Mission Institution will be expected to sign a bond with Government of Ghana to serve for a number of years after training. Further information on this can be obtained from the Human Resource for Health Directorate of the Ministry of Health.
4. Admission of serving officers (to post basic programmes) is subject to approval from Head of Institution / Agency.
6.2 Special Notice
• District Assemblies are encouraged to offer bursaries to candidates into any Health Training Institution. This is aimed at supporting those candidates during training so that they will be deployed to the respective Districts to work after their training.
• The Ministry of Health has developed operational guidelines for District Assembly Support and the guidelines have been disseminated to all District Assemblies.

CHAPTER EIGHT
ORIENTATION FOR STUDENTS AND INTERNS
STUDENT’S STATUS
Qualified High School Leavers are admitted into Health training Institutions after a selection interview. Types of programmes students may undertake are a two year certificate, a three year diploma, or degree programme. Educational institutions may be public or private. Students may be self or partially sponsored or may receive allowances from government and be bonded. Sponsorship allowances cease after completion of the school, and may be extended by six months only for those who fail their final year examinations.
Students are expected to pass their final examinations organizes by the institution, as well as the professional examinations organized by the Regulatory Body.
INTERNSHIP/NATIONAL SERVICE PERIOD
The internship period is a time after formal training that students are expected to the work in a health environment under supervision. Interns are expected to have passed their academic as well their professional examinations to qualify for internship with most professions.
Newly qualified professionals are required to register with the National Service Scheme for the one year rotation after the have passed their Licensure / professional exams.
Supervision for the internship period shall be provided by the Regulatory body, Health training Institution, Service site professionals, and the National Service Secretariat.
Internship period ranges from 12 months to two years for health professionals. Interns shall be paid allowances either by the National Secretariat or the Ministry of Health. Graduates not satisfying the standard of the Regulatory body may be made to extend the internship, until they are found competent as evidenced by the final report. Internship allowances cease immediately after completion of internship period.
EMPLOYMENT
Employment shall be by advert and interviews. The requirement shall be the provision of academic and professional certificates and good reports of internship for both self and government sponsorship candidates. Appointment letters shall be issued by the Employing Agencies which are Ghana Health Service, Teaching Hospitals, Christian Health Association of Ghana and the private sector. The employer may decide on the condition of service, salaries, promotion intervals and eligibility for further training. Yearly appraisal shall be held and awards provided for excellence. The employing Agency has power of Hiring and Firing. Employees must abide by code of ethics of the employing Agency.
